To whom it may concern,
I needed to give recognition where recognition is due and offer my thanks to the MAPP
program and specifically Joe Johnson. I’ve been in the education field since 2017 and have
worked with a variety of student populations, community organizations, and schools. I am
currently a third grade teacher this year and have a class of twenty one students. The main
behavior concerns within my classroom this year have been with the young boys that lack
respect towards myself and other female staff members. It is all too easy to get into an argument
or power struggle with the young boys who have a habit of talking back. Whenever I am able to
call for MAPP support services, specifically Joe Johnson, in the classroom setting he is able to
quickly and easily diffuse the situation. And I’ve come to realize that it is due to the respect my
young students have towards Mr. Johnson. Whether it be the fact that Mr. Johnson is male, black
or just overall a calm and respectable resource, the students take to him and respect him in a way
I may never experience as a white, young female. Because of this I have the utmost respect and
gratitude for how Mr. Johnson has taken the time to help cultivate an environment of respect and
trust within my classroom this year. As well as instill morals of kindness, accountability and
work ethic into the youth we all serve. He has been invaluable to my classroom and students.
This program doesn’t stop within my classroom however. Through MAPP Mr. Johnson
has been able to reach even more students on a deeper level through his outreach program getting
students involved in sports. He has started to get some students involved in jiu jitsu training in
the evenings on weekdays. This has shown some amazing results in some of the other students I
have observed participating in this. Our students have a lot going on in their lives. Many suffer
from chronic stress, trauma and have experienced unimaginable losses. These are also covid kids
whose education has suffered from Covid shutdowns in 2020 and 2021. There are large deficits
still beginning to show from this time where students were missing foundational skills. Therefore
academics are even harder for these students, on top of everyday stressors. Our students don’t
have many positive outlets available to them. Mr. Johnson has created one with his outreach
program. Jiu jitsu specifically has given select students a healthy outlet for their emotions while
teaching them useful skills and tools they can carry with them throughout their lives. We see
these coping strategies beginning to appear within these students even in the classroom.
I am also incredibly proud to be a part of Mr. Johnson’s basketball program that just
began for the second year in a row at our school. He has created yet another safe space for students on Saturday mornings to not only learn basketball skills and fundamentals, he has
created a place to build community. By asking staff to volunteer with things like scorekeeping
and concessions we are getting to build deeper relationships with our students that go way
beyond the confines of the classroom. And with limited transportation provided in hopes to get
more families involved, parents and guardians have been showing up for their students, their
nieces and nephews, and even encouraging younger students who aren’t as confident to open up.
The Saturday morning basketball league is fostering so much for our students.
I continue to be impressed with the way that the community and students have responded
to Mr. Johnson’s efforts with MAPP. Staff at school are continuously finding ways to help
support these programs whether it be with time volunteering on the weekends or campaigning to
find shoes for students interested in playing basketball. Students that spend lots of time with Mr.
Johnson continue to outgrow students around them. And even the students that aren’t around Mr.
Johnson or involved in his programs love nothing more than to see him each morning for their
daily hug or fist bump.
Overall I just wanted to express my gratitude for Mr. Johnson and his MAPP program.
For how it has helped within my classroom, helped me adjust my teaching philosophies and how
it’s made such a positive impact on our students in and out of the classroom.
Warm Regards,
Bryn Parker

To whom it may concern,
I'm writing this letter on behalf of Joe Johnson and his MAPP program. Joe has been an outstanding instructor and mentor to the kids at Ohio Brasa Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy. He has sponsored several kids travel and tournament entry fees. He has also bought their Gi's (uniform). Joe has been working with kids well over a decade. One of the first young men he brought in is currently a Brownbelt and an assistant instructors as well. Joe is well respected in the martial arts community and honestly he doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a positive pillar in our community. I've observed this man personally buy meals out of his OWN POCKET for these children. Joe legitimately cares for kids, sometimes to a fault, but he believes in his work and his purpose!
Sincerely,
Deon Thompson

Welcome to MAPP
We are proud to present our programs in support of our Toledo Communities!
- PEACE AND PROTECTION PROJECT
MAPP’s Peace and Protection Project has helped break the stigma of mental illness and will continue to help educate the African American and Hispanic community on the available state and Federal resources here in Toledo. By spreading this information MAPP is able to educate our neighborhoods on the importance of screening, mental health and building a safe place in our homes.
MAPP FITT
St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church’s (Perrysburg, OH) Thursday morning discussion group has helped MAPP FIT come into existence and make an impact to increase safety "on the streets" of our metropolitan area. MAPP FIT is a program designed to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of young adults. Through various forms of physical conditioning and counseling participants are provided opportunities to achieve improvement in three basic areas of confidence:
1. Physical Well Being – Participants should increase endurance as well as obtain improved self-confidence to deflect bullying and harassment tactics.
2. Personal Safety – Participants are counseled about methods and resources available to improve and maintain personal and family safety.
3. Continuing Self-Improvement – Participants are counseled not only as to the importance of continued self-improvement but also resources and methods for pursuing this objective.
It has been particularly difficult to secure a meeting place during COVID - and a creative alliance with Personal Training 19 has provided a huge step forward. Pictured above are (left to right) Jordan Rivera, Aaron Kramer (Fitness 19 Manager and assisting instructor), Zion Watson, Kenyatta Bowen, Joe Johnson, Lisa Hawthorne RN (assisting instructor) and Danesia Barnett. Not all of the youth could make it, but it gives you a sense of the diversity of the group.

As stated in the brochure, this program runs June 13 through July 24 (except week of July 4)
Mon-Thur, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and is for Ages 8-11. This is not only a good opportunity for youth in the Point Place community to stay active through the summer, but also an opportunity for families to become familiar with SunBridge Schools. For more information please call MAPP CEO, Joe Johnson (419-215-6942) or email director@mapp4life.org.
MAPP @ SunBridge
MAPP has been contracted to provide after school programing at SunBridge Schools. The objective of these programs is to continue using physical conditioning as a means to build confidence on the part of participating students and give staff the ability to develop meaningful relationships. Students that have been having specific challenges are assigned to the program as MAPP’s efforts over the summer had a positive effect on the participants.
MAPP is creating a new program, MENtoring using the concept of “reach one, teach one” with the students at SunBridge. This program was recommended to the male teachers at SunBridge by MAPP CEO, Joe Johnson. If a student athlete is having challenges in class, then a male member of the faculty attend a game on the weekend to offer them encouragement. If after two weeks of reinforcement the student shows improvement in class they are given a reward. The concept is being expanded to include female faculty and students.
MAPP/SunBridge Basketball League
SunBridge’s Coach, Freddie Zamora along with MAPP CEO, Joe Johnson have designed an intermural activity designated MAPP/SunBridge Basketball League (MSBL). The concept is to offer age appropriate team competition among approximately 70 youth enrolled at SunBridge in the form of intermural basketball competition.
